This example uses some cool webmapping and javascript technologies to tell an incremental story with linked map transitions. As you scroll down the page, the story evolves and the map takes you to the locations associated with each part of the story. We have disabled map zooming for this example to make the experience a bit smoother.
The first stop on our demo tour is Mt Albert Grammar School. Mt Albert Grammar has an EQI number of 419 and received funding of $57.18 per student in 2023. This equates to overall funding of $173,427.
We can add a bit more info about the demographics of the school or possibly some other information from other sources to add more nuance to the story.
The next step on our little trip is Hamilton Boys' High School. EQI number of 429. With approximately 2100 students, this school receives funding of approximately $179,000 in 2023.
Heading further south we come to Palmerston North Boys' High School. EQI number of 437. Funding blah blah.
Next stop, Nayland College in Nelson. EQI number of 464.
Finally, Taieri College in Otago. EQI, 455.
This demo has shown how we might use this newer technology to build some far more engaging data-driven stories than we currently use in the Ministry. We have used a map in this example, but it is just as easy to use animated charts, pictures, other media, or a combination of all.
Storytelling is a very useful tool for building engagement. Our team is in a perfect position to begin to leverage tools like this to communicate our results.
